Shakyamuni Buddha sits in the center of this painting with his hand touching the earth, his pose at the moment he achieved enlightenment. He is surrounded by a retinue of other buddhas, bodhisattvas (enlightened beings), and the teacher Padmasambhava. Padmasambhava can be seen at the top center of the painting holding a staff and wearing a red robe and hat.

This painting was one of a series devoted to Shakyamuni Buddha and was intended to hang in a Buddhist monastery. The prominence of Padmasambhava suggests that the painting was likely made for a monastery associated with the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism that he founded, the Nyingmapa School.
