DescriptionDwelling near rocky shoreline with figure at doorway; mountains in distance.Gallery LabelThese lyrical paintings, which come from a larger album, highlight features of summer and autumn. Shitao subtly presents the seasons with delicate washes and expressive brushwork. In the calligraphic poems, he asserts his thoughts about the transformation of the universe. On the right leaf, for example, Shitao inscribes: “The generative forces of Heaven and Earth crystallize, gradually unfolding the four seasons and morning and evening. Through the vital principle in nature, they will leave something wonderful for a hundred generations.”
