Earl Horter may have quickly made the graphite sketch on site and brought it back to his studio to use as a compositional guide for his etching. Although the print retains much of the looseness of Horter’s initial rendering of a New York storefront, many of its details are refined. The final image was reversed through the printing process. Horter often took to the streets for inspiration. Many of his early prints depict views of New York City and its architecture—subjects that also frequently appeared in his commercial advertising work.
