DescriptionRuins of house with bent, seated man in chair on porch, woman standing in doorway.Gallery LabelFor Argentine Aftermath, Frederic James matched his medium to his subject. Loose, wet brushwork soaks the paper's surface, describing the destruction of the Great Flood of 1951 in Kansas City's Argentine Neighborhood. Hope remains, however, through James' inclusion of the patchwork quilt carefully spread out to dry at the left side of the composition.
James, who taught watercolor at the Kansas City Art Institute, also collected watercolors by his contemporaries. He and his wife, Diana, gave Morris Graves's Plover by the Sea and Andrew Wyeth's Old Orchard to the Nelson-Atkins.
