Warfare was endemic in 17th-century Europe and a common subject in art. The cannon shown here is part of an artillery battery in front of a town under siege, which can be seen to the right in the distance. Cannons at that time were still somewhat exotic pieces of equipment, as implied by the emphasis given to this one by the artist.
