The Virgin Mary and other devastated followers huddle around the dead body of Jesus in this intimate portrait of grief. Mary Magdalene stands upright with her arms raised, wringing her hands with a gesture of utter despair. The carefully crafted engraving is one of a series of sixteen plates by German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer. The great attention to detail and subtle gradations of light and shade made these prints coveted collectors’ items. Dürer often gave them as gifts to friends and patrons.
