The arch of Titus in the Roman forum was built to commemorate the destruction of Jerusalem by the emperor Titus in 70 c.e., after the crushing of the Jewish rebellion. Note the play of shadow over the architecture and under the arch, which has a coffered vault and a sculpted relief set into the inner wall.
