Gallery LabelLouis Conrad Rosenberg sought out centuries-old buildings as subjects for his etchings. The structure Rosenberg selected for this print is a defensive tower built in the 1100s in Nevers, France, which was transformed into a windmill in the 1600s.
The medieval tower dominates the left side of the sheet. It is balanced by empty space at the right. Rosenberg captured the scene with great sensitivity. He depicted the tower under specific conditions and at a certain time of day. The sun shines brightly from an angle, eliminating details on one side of the tower, while casting the other side in dark shadow.
