Gallery LabelThis huge wooden head, with its ferocious expression and flaming hair, was originally made for a Buddhist guardian figure. Many types of wrathful deities have been incorporated into the Buddhist belief system as powerful protectors of the faith. Some flank gateways to temple precincts, while others stand guard on altar platforms within halls of worship. Because the body of this guardian has been lost, its exact identity is uncertain.
