The so-called Maison Carrée (or Square House) at Nimes in the south of France is one of the most complete examples of ancient Roman architecture to survive. The artist specialized in the depiction of Roman ruins, reflecting neo-classical taste, and he often embellished them, as here, with everyday figures such as washer-women. In this watercolor, the colors are rather faded, because in the past it has been exposed to daylight.
