Provenance

With C. T. Loo (1880-1957), New York, by 1957;

His estate, New York, 1957-1962;

Purchased from his estate's sale, Jade & Other Semi-Precious Mineral Carvings...From the Estate of the Late C. T. Loo New York, Sold by Order of the Heirs, Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, October 10, 1962, lot 235, through Frank Caro Chinese Art, stock no. FC-5441, by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1962 [1].

NOTES:

[1] This sale of Loo's estate resulted from a property dispute between Loo's daughters and Frank Caro, who took over the management of Loo's New York branch upon Loo's retirement in 1953. Although Caro purchased some of Loo's former stock at this sale in order to build an inventory for his own gallery, Frank Caro Chinese Art, he bought these chairs while acting as agent at the sale on behalf of the Nelson-Atkins. With thanks to Dr. Joanna M. Gohmann, Associate Curator of Provenance and Object Histories, National Museum of Asian Art, Washington, DC, for sharing her expertise on the history of the Loo galleries with the Nelson-Atkins.
