[1] Alexandre Dumas, son of the novelist of the same name and a celebrated author in his own right, was friends with Meissonier, who painted Dumas' portrait in 1877. Dumas lent this watercolor to Exposition Meissonier , Galerie Georges Petit, in March 1893. The exhibition catalogue describes their friendship: "On sait quelle ami “On sait quelle amitié unissait Alexandre Dumas à Meissonier. Si l’on voulait conter par le menu les anecdotes qui se rattachent à chacun des dessins réunis ici, il faudrait Presque un volume.” (“We know what friendship untied Alexandre Dumas and Meissonier. If we were to recount in detail the anecdotes which are attached to each of the drawings brought together here, it would take a volume.”)
