Gallery Label
Ruins in Moonlight shows an imaginary landscape whose ghostly statue and shadowy ruins evoke a sense of awe and mystery. It powerfully illustrates two main interests of the Romantic movement: ruins and fantastical subjects. This watercolor is attributed to John Martin, an active member of the Romantic school of painters that flourished in the first half of the 19th century. Well known for his night scenes, Martin used the interplay of glowing light against dark tones to convey the haunting mood of his subject.
