Ray Bethers traveled widely during the 1930s creating billboards aimed at potential tourists. However, he could also capture the spirit of a place in small scale works like this one. A trip in 1932 inspired this woodcut of Taxco de Alarcón, a former silver-mining center on the side of a mountain in southern Mexico. Using incredibly finely cut lines and delicate crosshatching, Bethers described the whitewashed adobe houses with tiled roofs that line the town’s steep, narrow alleys
