The identities of both the artist and sitter associated with this portrait bust are uncertain. It is typical, however, of the stylistic approach of early-18th-century Rome, where the Baroque style was invigorated by a new sense of realism both in painting and sculpture. This is particularly apparent here in the sitter's informal but distinctive dress, and in his very individualized features that the artist has not attempted to idealize.
