Conrad Buff is known for finding architectural forms in nature and also for capturing the brilliant California sunlight. Both qualities are present in this lithograph. For instance, the peak bathed in light at the upper left echoes the shape of the bell tower as well as the manner in which the sun reflects off its whitewashed surface.  Swiss-born Buff moved to southern California in 1906. Inspired by California and his frequent trips around the Southwest, Buff left his job painting houses in Los Angeles and became an artist.
