Alphonse Legros was a leader of the etching revival in France. In this composition, rather British in its rural serenity, the fisherman is emphasized by the simplicity of the river bank on which he sits, which is merely suggested. The bold strokes of the trees and vegetation on the far bank recall the free brushwork of the Impressionists.
