DescriptionIn middle ground, waterfall seen in misty hills; green and grey tones.Gallery LabelTo create the dense fog in Italian Hills, Arthur Bowen Davies layered diluted washes of white opaque watercolor. The greens of his landscape bleed through the clouds. Touches of less diluted opaque paint create a waterfall at the center of the scene, anchoring the composition while the gray paper adds an overall cool tone.
Davies created landscapes in watercolor intermittently throughout his career. During the last four years of his life, he spent half of each year in Europe. While there, he painted outdoors, representing the landscape in watercolor.
