Following his resurrection from the dead, Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene, who mistook him for a gardener. When she recognized him, he forbade her to touch him, as he had not yet ascended to heaven. The artist deviates from the traditional version of this story by showing Jesus blessing his disciple rather than pulling away. Their meeting takes place in front of a rocky outcropping that leads the eye to a view of a city. The fine and shallow lines used to render this distant scene contribute to the illusion of depth.
