Animals acting out human foolishness appear often in Goya’s Caprichos. The monkey-painter is a sly reference to the distinction Goya made between real artists like himself and those who merely aped what was placed before them, without thought. In Chagoya’s print, the monkey with brush in hand has Chagoya’s face. Is he mocking himself for copying Goya? On the easel is a different sort of portrait.
