DescriptionTwo large and six small oranges within an abstracted design of branches and foliage. Colors are beige, black, green, orange, and yellow.Gallery LabelThe bold graphic quality of Johan Thorn Prikker’s poster advertising the Dutch art exhibition in Krefeld, Germany, stands in marked contrast to the mystical tone and subject matter of his earlier paintings. This shift in direction and style was prompted by conversations with Art Nouveau designer Henry van de Velde, who urged Thorn Prikker to apply himself to the decorative or applied arts. Here, the artist situates the poster’s informative message—what, when, where—between two symmetrical, horizontal bands of interlocking organic forms. Thorn Prikker’s palette of yellow, orange and green provides a vibrant counterpoint to the stark black and white linear elements. As a whole, the design and scale of the poster catch and hold the eye of the viewer.
