Saint Lucy was an early Christian martyr, and Jacques Bellange was the court painter to the Duke of Lorraine in the eastern French city of Nancy. Bellange was much influenced by Italian Mannerism, evidenced here by the complex poses of the figures and their somewhat confusing juxtaposition. Note also the almost obsessive interest in detail, especially on the costume and armor of the soldiers. It has been rightly said that in this print the artist successfully merges two apparently irreconcilable qualities: refined elegance and a powerful religious expressionism.
