This engraving, like that of Samuel Bernard nearby, was made after a portrait by Rigaud and is an archetypal image of the worldly grandeur of the French Catholic church in the 18th century. Though his costume is ecclesiastic, he is presented with the pomp and circumstance of a king or statesman, with no suggestion of humility or austerity, which some might prefer in portraits of the clergy!
