Gallery LabelThe Bronco Buster was Frederic Remington's first sculptural composition and remains his most popular. Based on a drawing published on April 30, 1892, in Harper's Weekly, the work shows a determined cowboy struggling to tame a wild horse, although it alludes more broadly to man's eternal conflict with nature. The sculpture's impact rests on Remington's convincing delineation of muscular gesture and exertion, effects that he refined over time by working on variations of the theme. Anticipating the subject's popularity, the sculptor secured in 1895 a copyright for The Bronco Buster, which was cast more than 300 times.
