This work shows Jupiter, king of the gods, disguised as Diana, goddess of the hunt, seducing the nymph Callisto. The careful, clear poses are typical of the neoclassical style and show the influence of ancient Roman sculpted reliefs. The elegance of the figures also recalls fashionable portraiture of the time, for which the artist Angelica Kaufmann was famous.
