Shhhhhh. . . . Who or what is this trio of women straining to hear?

 

The sparse environment in which these cloaked women huddle; the barely discernible figures that dissolve into the background; and the saturated, inky tones that enshroud the image establish a pensive and mysterious mood. John Stockton de Martelly supplies the actors, sets the stage and then steps back to encourage viewers of his print to create their own scripts.
