Gallery LabelHeinrich Aldegrever belongs to a group of German artists known as the “Little Masters” for the diminutive scale of their engravings. Many drew upon the stylistic innovations of Dürer, particularly his ability to condense a wealth of narrative detail into a small space. Aldegrever’s depiction of the birth of Jesus illustrates Dürer’s influence. Mary’s kneeling pose, the angel cradling the Christ child, and the architectural structure are based on Dürer’s 1510 woodcut. Aldegrever, however, varied the pose of the two shepherds.
