Gallery Label"Every rural Court House had one [a “Court House Gang”] and probably still does. Those who run for public office, however high, must take these gangs into account. They know where the votes are and how to round them up." — Thomas Hart Benton
One of the last of Benton’s nearly 100 lithographs, County Politics showcases his career-long interest in small town life and politics. The Buffalo, Missouri, courthouse, one of the oldest courthouses in the state (since destroyed), is depicted in the background. This setting recalls the central square of many Missouri towns, including Benton’s home town of Neosho.
