Gallery LabelPope Martin V (1368-1431) came from an aristocratic Roman family and ended the Great Schism during which one pope resided in Rome and another, rival pope reigned in Avignon in southern France. Here Martin is shown in procession with cardinals and bishops, all packed together to show church unity. The print is colored by hand and printed on a book page, as can be seen from the typeface showing through. Paper was expensive at the time, so this may have been done to save money.
