Gallery LabelThis humorous view of the farmers' market shows an array of yuppies and other characters negotiating the price of tomatoes, squash and cucumbers. Flying over this landscape is the muse and goddess of the biggest and best tomatoes. Colescott began his career as a political cartoonist, and now, as a printmaker and painter, he creates satirical, complex narratives that comment on politics, fashion and trends of contemporary society. In this work he satirizes a lifestyle represented by the central figures with a child in a stroller. The man's tank top and the woman's shopping bag identify them as organic farmers' market regulars.
