The Great Avalanche of 1905—10,000 Bells represents a departure for cowboy artist Charles Marion Russell, better known for his realistic images of the West. Here, Russell skillfully renders an improbable scene, rather than a believable one—thousands of blue bells tumbling down a mountain pass. Closely examine these fantastical bells and you will see that each one is distinct. Russell describes this dream world so vividly that we almost hear the resounding clangs of the falling bells.
