Designed by architect James Wyatt, this neo-classical jug on tripod stand was probably made at the metalwork manufactory of Boulton and Fothergill near Birmingham, for it appears in one of their pattern books. The jug on stand would appear to have been ordered by London goldsmith John Robins, who submitted it for assay in London and, therefore, struck his own mark on it. As a "smallworker," Robins specialized in making wine labels and inkstands, so he may have received a special order for a jug on stand from a client and found it expedient simply to order it wholesale from another firm.
