DescriptionPear-shaped body with elongated fluted neck and outward turning lip and hinged lid; one applied beaded band around throat and two at bottom of fluting with swags below; leaves around base; outward flaring fluted conical foot with gadrooned edge; elongated handle wrapped in wicker, applied ananthus leaves below hinge; shell terminalGallery LabelDesigned by architect James Wyatt, this neo-classical jug on tripod stand was probably made at the metalwork manufactory of Boulton and Fothergill near Birmingham, for it appears in one of their pattern books. The jug on stand would appear to have been ordered by London goldsmith John Robins, who submitted it for assay in London and, therefore, struck his own mark on it. As a "smallworker," Robins specialized in making wine labels and inkstands, so he may have received a special order for a jug on stand from a client and found it expedient simply to order it wholesale from another firm.
