Gallery Label
Brueghel's landscape depicts the wonders of the Alps, which in the 16th century were a formidable barrier between northern and southern Europe. Panoramic views like this with rocks towering above valleys were a popular formula to evoke the terrifying grandeur of nature at a time when interest in geology was increasing. Brueghel's view is probably imaginary, even though the artist had crossed the Alps.
