Gallery LabelJames McBey served with the British army in Palestine during the Great War (1914–18), fighting against the Turks. This matter-of-fact view of Jerusalem may be compared to a much more dramatic view of the city in a painting by Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) in the Nelson-Atkins American paintings collection. The sketchy rendering of McBey’s buildings, leaving much of the paper bare, vividly conveys the heat of the day.
