DescriptionInterior scene with man standing at podium. People sit on benches, most with their backs to the viewer. To the left is a pot-bellied stove.Gallery LabelAs Benton traveled about the country gathering inspiration for his art, he was never without his sketchbook. The Meeting is based on drawings Benton made while on the road. In this instance, more than a decade separates Benton’s drawing of a preacher and his congregation in a West Virginia meeting house from this lithograph. Nevertheless, the print is nearly an exact replica of the 1928 drawing, retaining a freshly observed, made-on-the-spot feel.
