Gallery LabelIn this image, a dense crowd gathers to watch an animated exchange between a male news reporter and a woman at a women’s liberation march. Included in the frame is a television news camera. Garry Winogrand made this picture as part of his project Public Relations, for which he was awarded a 1969 Guggenheim Fellowship to “photograph the effect of media on events.” Images such as this one deconstruct the idea that newsworthy events are spontaneous occurrences: on the contrary, Winogrand’s image emphasizes their staged theatricality.
