DescriptionThis fan-shaped album leaf is silk mounted on yellowish paper. The silk turns brown with age, showing a vertical crack about 2" from the left edge of the picture surface. The painting was done in a highly refined, meticulous manner. A residential complex with tiny figures inside the buidings nestles in a blue-and-green mountain landscape, which occupies about two-thirds of the painting. Fingerlike peaks loom in the distance, while angular rocks line up the foreground. The void at the left represents sky and water, divided by a stretch of very pale hills.Gallery LabelHonorable guests in a palatial mountain retreat enjoy a banquet as late arrivals approach from below. Scenes of lovely evening banquets gained popularity in the 1100s. Though the identity of the painter is unknown, this artist paid homage to Shi Rui, who specialized in the blue and green style and carried on the thematic tradition.
