The modern equivalent of this portrait would be a photograph of a fashionista in a popular magazine. The sitter is a society beauty, sumptuously turned out, and proud of her chiseled profile. Such portraits come close to fashion plates and emphasize the importance of dress in the 18th century, a time when people's social status was more rigidly defined by what they wore than it is today.
