Childe Hassam prominently placed an American flag near the center of this print. This gesture may affirm his support for the war. He described American involvement as a morally imperative “fight for democracy” throughout the world. Following the United States’ entry into World War I, flags of the Allied Nations festooned New York City streets such as the one shown here. Depictions of the modern city filled with skyscrapers and decorated with flags became a major theme for Hassam.
