In this scene, the cavorting figures of little boys represent the souls of the departed accompanied by nymphs, Tritons, sea horses, dolphins and sea centaurs. The subject may derive from classical sarcophagi or mosaics, which often represented fictitious marine creatures derived from Greek and Roman mythology. This print is an experimental proof made as a trial run by the artist. This would then be followed by a first state, that version of the print sanctioned by the artist for public sale.
