Gallery Label
Edward Weston began photographing in a soft-focus style in the 1910s, but by the mid-1920s he had shifted to a purist use of the medium concentrated on simplified forms. Traveling with his lover, Tina Modotti, to Mexico City, Weston opened a studio and immersed himself in the vibrant community of artists and intellectuals, including the painter Diego Rivera. Weston made several close-up portraits of friends and acquaintances, taken slightly below eye level—like this one of Rose Roland Covarrubias.
