Wood's December Afternoon features a man leading his horse to a sled for an enjoyable wintry ride. The seasonal subject, anecdotal narrative, and highly descriptive detail mark a throwback to popular nineteenth-century prints, especially those by Currier and Ives, which Wood himself collected. Heartwarming Americana of this type regained popularity in the 1920s and extended well into the World War II era.
