Goltzius visited Italy and was much influenced by Italian mannerism and a study of Roman antiquities. Here the background group has a typically mannerist elegance and confusion while the bigger foreground figures are more monumental and recall classical statuary. The way the figures are set against a plain foreground suggests this print may have been unfinished or intended for further development
