DescriptionChinese lady's coat of exceptional quality; having a rich, deep aubergine satin ground with blind brocaded dragon and cloud roundels appearing regularly over the surface; and fitted with an elaborate "cloud-collar" of densely couched gold-wrapped silk floss in ensemble with enset panels and borders of landscape and figural scenes and geometric motifs done in technically superb satin stitch embroidery. Technically and stylistically similar panels appear at all four openings and border the lower hem, making in all a most exceptional ensemble; and with gilt buttons of superior casting.Gallery LabelThe gold and
polychrome embroidered facings (the contrasting trims along the edges)
embellish this jacket in black figural silk. Combining handmade embroidery with
machine-made ribbons, the facings were produced in substantial numbers. The
woman who owned the jacket chose facings with the popular yunjian (cloud
collar) and embroidered images of ladies in a garden.
