Gallery LabelWhat will the end of the world look like? Blazing comets? Towering flames? Crumbling ruins? An angelic army?
A grim international situation and the biblical Book of Revelations influenced the artist as he imagined this dramatic subject. Boris Artzybasheff, a native-born Russian, lived through the Russian Revolution and World War I before immigrating to the United States. In 1937, the year he made this engraving, America still suffered the effects of the Great Depression, while the unsettled atmosphere in Europe would lead to World War II in just two years’ time.
