DescriptionLooming view of grey-blue ship prow, seen slightly from right, surrounded by spit-bite spots, lines, and areas; one line extends below prow to bottom center. Light grey background has random scratches.Gallery LabelRobert Stackhouse is a noted American sculptor whose drawings, watercolors and prints depict iconic images of ocean liners, boats and serpents. His sculptures, made of wood slats, resemble A-frame architectural structures or ancient vessels. A fluid dialogue between sculpture and drawing is reflected in Stackhouse's art. In this etching, the undulating contours of what appears to be a wooden, sea-going vessel are surrounded by a wash and splatter of blue-gray paint. The prow of this ancient vessel seems to puncture the surface of the paper. The ship appears to float on the paper and break through its surface, as if appearing from the past to enter our present moment.
