Gallery LabelBrussels-born painter Phillipe de Champaigne (1602–1674) enjoyed considerable success in France for his devotional works of art and penetrating portraits of members of the royal court. He was one of the founding members of the French Academy and later became one of its professors. This engraving by his friend and fellow Fleming Gérard Edelinck reproduces a lost self-portrait from 1668. The inscription celebrates the painter’s achievements while the view of Brussels in the distance identifies him as a native of the Spanish Netherlands (presentday Belgium).
