DescriptionThis kimono (or yukata) is constructed of a soft cotton fabric dyed with indigo. Matsubara Nobuo used nagaita chūgata (long board, middle[-sized] stencil) method, which refers to the long board measuring over six meters and middle-sized stencils. The artist used a stencil with boat pattern for the front and a stencil with stream pattern for the rear. The stencils were made by stencil makers in Ise, Japan. Matsubara’s mother Matsubara Mayo 松原眞代 (born 1943) tailored the fabric into kimono (this is karijitate, or temporary tailoring).Provenance
With Matsubara Nobuo, Chiba, Japan, since 2021.
