DescriptionThis horizontally oriented painting depicts a boy who appears to be about 10-12 years old standing with a group of nine farm animals. The blond, pale-skinned youth wears blue jeans and a t-shirt and stands about a third of the way in from the right edge of the painting in the foreground, directly facing the viewer and holding a black goat at his proper right on a red rope lead and halter. To the left of that goat is another, this one white. In front of it stands a rooster, and further to the left, a sheep and pig. Positioned behind them is a large, white cow, seen from the front, with its head turned to the right. A smaller cow, white with brown spots, stands in profile facing left, to the right of the white cow and directly behind the boy. Its head is turned slightly toward the front of the picture. Behind the cow and facing the same direction, there is a chestnut mule with a white star, also with its head turned slightly forward. A large red-brown horse with a white face and black mane stands tallest of the group at the back, facing the right side of the picture.
