DescriptionOval image of a woman in profile. She's wearing a checkered dress with a lace collar and a bow. She is seated beside a small table where she rest her left elbow. The table is covered in a dark patterned cloth and a book is placed near the center.Gallery LabelAmateur photography in mid-1800s England emerged from a social context that valued both artistic experimentation and scientific inquiry. Women amateurs were few and far between. Those who practiced photography often came from aristocratic backgrounds and photographed people in their social circles. Lady Harriet Elizabeth (born St. Clair-Erskine), who became Countess of Münster upon her marriage, made this self-portrait, which may have originally been intended for a family album.
