Amateur photography in mid-1800s England emerged from a social context that valued both artistic experimentation and scientific inquiry. Women amateurs were few and far between. Those who practiced photography often came from aristocratic backgrounds and photographed people in their social circles. Lady Harriet Elizabeth (born St. Clair-Erskine), who became Countess of Münster upon her marriage, made this self-portrait, which may have originally been intended for a family album.
